Mayo | Jennie Thompson SmartGiving was founded by Phyllis Freedman, who has been involved in the not-for-profit sector all her life, having been raised in a home where community service and philanthropy were essential ingredients of the family DNA. For the past 25 years of her professional career, Phyllis has held key positions in non-profit management and fund raising, helping organizations operate and raise money more effectively and efficiently. Before establishing SmartGiving, Phyllis was Executive Vice President and General Manager of Epsilon's Fund Raising & Membership Services Group — a $30 million dollar consultative services division of that $100 million dollar plus database marketing company. Under her leadership, Epsilon's FRMS Group served some of the most respected nonprofit organizations in the country. Phyllis has also been a committed community activist, serving as Treasurer of the Board of Directors of the Whitman-Walker Clinic, Washington, DC. She is currently Secretary and Chair of the Development Committee of the Board of Food & Friends, an organization based in Washington, DC that delivers hot meals to homebound persons living with AIDS, breast cancer and other life-threatening illnesses. Regularly recognized for excellence by her peers, in 1999 Phyllis was awarded the Professional Achievement Award by the Direct Marketing Association's Non-Profit Federation. In 1997, she was selected "Woman of the Year" by the Washington Area Women's Direct Response Group. And, in 2000, she was selected by the Non-Profit Times as one of the 12 most influential women in direct response fund raising. Sandra is a consultant specializing in philanthropy and non-profit communications. For the past several years, Sandra was a partner with Venture Philanthropy Partners, a philanthropic investment organization that provides financial and management support to nonprofits addressing the development and educational needs of children in the Washington, DC area. Prior to VPP, she held a variety of strategic communications positions with prominent non-profits, including the United Negro College Fund and the Washington Hospital Center. John helped found Epsilon shortly after receiving his MBA from Harvard. He subsequently helped take the company public in an IPO in 1984 and he was on board when Epsilon merged with American Express in 1990 and in 1997 when Epsilon again became an independent company. John "retired" in 2000. He is sought after as a speaker throughout the world and is a widely published author on marketing and fund raising. He has been honored numerous times by a variety of marketing and fund raising organizations. Kirk Kirkpatrick is a real estate developer focusing on projects that help revitalize existing neighborhoods with affordable mixeduse and residential projects. He has held senior management positions in marketing for major corporations. Kirk earned an MBA from New York University and a BA from University of Pennsylvania. He focuses his philanthropy on the University of Pennsylvania's Institute of Contemporary Art where he co-founded the ICA Leadership Circle. As Director, Leadership Initiative, Harvard Business School, Tony directs an interdisciplinary initiative that serves as a catalyst for cutting-edge leadership research and course development. Prior to HBS, Tony pursued a career in database marketing and held senior general management positions at a variety of companies. Tony completed his MBA from Harvard Business School and his Bachelor's Degree, summa cum laude, from Boston College. Tony is the co-author of a forthcoming book to be published by HBS Press, Leadership Legacies, An American Century of Business. A recognized speaker, teacher and author, Jennie Thompson was a founder of Craver, Mathews, Smith & Company (CMS), the progressive fundraising and membership development agency in Washington, DC. Jennie is now a consultant working with international and U.S. nonprofit organizations. She is a frequent speaker and trainer at international conferences on fundraising, organizational development, and communications strategies for nonprofits. Jennie is immediate Past-Chair of the Board of the Resource Alliance (formerly the International Fundraising Group), headquatered in London. |
